“This book describes the journey through a 4000 km spiritual marathon touching all 9 provinces of South Africa with the transcendental books of Srila Prabhupada. My mission was to see if, amidst the bustle of the malls and the fatigue of the tarmac, these seeds of bhakti could still find a place to grow.”
From General to Foot Soldier: A Shift in Heart
My relationship with the road has not always been so bold. When I first joined the Pretoria temple as a young man of twenty-three, fresh from India, I was paralyzed by a profound shyness. While the “legendary soldiers” of the movement were out in the malls and border towns like Kimberley, I sought the relative safety of the kitchen. Managing a feast for fifty people was a relief because it meant I didn’t have to face the vulnerability of a stranger’s “no.”
Eventually, I found my stride, moving from the kitchen to the streets of Durban, where I eventually “won” the national book distribution marathon. I remember proudly telling my spiritual master, Kadamba Kānana Swami, of my victory. He looked at me with a gaze that was both gentle and challenging. “I don’t want you to win marathons,” he said. “I want you to be a general, not just a soldier. Organize book distribution.”
For years, I followed that order, organizing at a national level. But by late 2025, I felt a weariness creeping into my heart. I realized that the enthusiasm I was trying to manage in others had to first be revived in myself. To find that fire again, I had to step down from the ranks of the “generals” and return to the front lines. I packed one bag, took my Govardhana-śilā, and set out as a simple foot soldier to walk the malls and roads of the country.
